It’s that time of the year again. “What time of the year?” you may be asking yourself… It’s 秋刀魚 “sanma” time! Otherwise known as Pacific Saury in English. The Kanji characters of this fish are particularly interesting! The first character is 秋 “Aki” Autumn, the second 刀 “katana” sword and the last 魚 “sakana” fish. Their name literally reads “Autumn swordfish”! If you’ve seen one, then you would see straight away that they do indeed resemble a shiny sword!
These fish have come into season. Beginning their migration to warmer waters down south. And we get to eat them first!
